Copyright overview

Copyright is designed to protect the maker of a creation. It helps to define how others are allowed to use the authors work. It helps to keep others from stealing someone else's work. It creates an environment where people need to think for themselves and come up with new ideas.

Copyright is designed to protect the owner

Copyright protection gives the author the permission to create copies. The author also has the permission to sell or give out and use copies of the product. The author can create new works based on the previous work under copyright protection. The author also has permission to display the work in public.

Safe practices

The best way to keep from a copyright violation is to create your own images, code and page layouts. You can begin by using a drawing program or just a pencil and paper to create your own designs and images. It's best not to start with someone else's image because even if it has lots of changes to the image it could still violate the copyright.

It is safest to never assume that anything on the public domain is safe to use. Some sites have images, JavaScript code, etc that are free for anyone to use. These items usually require that some credit is given to the creator like having the link written down or some other means to give the credit back to them. While some sites may even offer stuff that may not even be free use and not even know, so its best to avoid copying it if you aren't sure.

Some limited use

However there are some provisions given through fair use and educational use guidelines to use some copyrighted materials. These however are limited and can still infringe upon the copyright if you're not careful. Some of the limited uses can be for noncommercial and educational use. Certain copyrights will give permission for use or copying items to be posted to a site or used as long as it's for noncommercial or nonprofit use.

While educational use can allow for use during a certain class or while at school. Still there are all kinds of things to be careful about even under this kind of fair use.

When someone is guilty of copyright infringement it is when they violate the items above. Only the owner has the right to distribute, reproduce, display the work or allow others to do so. Best thing is to keep the content for your web page original by developing it yourself and then there is no worry about violating copyright.

Adherence to copyright

From images to text, I personally have tried to do exactly that, almost everything on this site I created myself or have been received permission to use on my site. Any other content used on my site is for learning how to work with the things taught within the class. Any and all of this content that is not my own and permission is not given to keep it up it will be removed by the end of this semester or sooner if asked to remove before that time to keep within fair use in an educational setting. I highly recommend being safe and not copying, posting or even using any content offered or posted online with no specific copyright information given. If you really want to use it make sure to ask for permission.
